€180,00

incl. VAT

Your first day beyond the piste, with beacon, shovel and probe in hand. The Basic Avalanche Safety Day is a 4.5 to 5 hour course in Zürs am Arlberg, Austria, led by a fully certified Austrian ski instructor and ski mountain guide. You learn how avalanche danger works, how to search with a beacon, shovel and probe, how to measure slope angle and how to plan a ski tour. It costs €180 per person including VAT, needs at least 4 participants and runs December to April in German or English.

The journey

Off-piste skiing on the Arlberg starts with knowing what you are looking at. This day covers the basics: how avalanches form, what the avalanche bulletin tells you, and how to find and dig out a buried partner. You do it in real terrain above Zürs, with a certified guide. No prior knowledge is needed. It also works as a refresher if your last beacon practice was a few seasons ago.

What you learn:

  • Avalanche danger: snowpack basics, the five danger levels and how to read the daily avalanche bulletin
  • Beacon search: switching between send and search mode, signal search, fine search and pinpointing
  • Probe and shovel: probing technique and efficient shovelling for a fast recovery
  • Slope angle: measuring and estimating steepness, and recognising terrain traps
  • Tour planning: route choice, timing and a basic decision framework before you leave the piste
  • Gear: what a complete emergency kit contains and what to look for when buying or renting

The Arlberg

The Arlberg is where alpine skiing began. It is also Austria's largest interconnected ski area: St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Zürs, Lech, Warth and Schröcken share one lift network with more than 300 km of pistes and around 200 km of ski routes. The terrain off those routes is the reason avalanche knowledge matters here. It runs from the open slopes around Zürs to the Valluga at 2,811 m, where descents with skis are only permitted with a guide.

Responsibility: its your own responsibility to take part.
